In California, the State Bar allows for law students to participate in a program called the Law Office Study Program (LOSP), which allows students to fulfill their first-year curriculum requirements through working in a law office setting, instead of attending traditional classroom lectures. The LOSP is a rigorous program that provides students with hands-on training and experience in a variety of legal areas, such as legal research and writing, client intake and interviewing, negotiation, and trial preparation. To participate in the LOSP, students must work a minimum of 18 hours per week in a law office and attend weekly seminars that are designed to supplement the work experience.
