05 Jun Exam Stats for the October 2023 FYLSX
October 2023 did not prove kind to the test takers
The October 2023 California First-Year Law Students’ Examination (FYLSX) results are in, and they reveal a lot about the current state of legal education in California. A total of 179 students braved the exam, but only 13.4% managed to pass. It’s clear that the path to becoming a lawyer isn’t easy, and the numbers tell a story of determination and varied success.
For those studying at ABA-accredited California law schools, the pass rates were 15.1% for first-time takers and 12.3% for repeaters. It’s a tough climb, but some made it through. On the other hand, students from unaccredited correspondence and distance learning law schools faced their own set of challenges, with pass rates of 11.1% and 14.6%, respectively.
What’s particularly interesting are the experiences of disqualified and special students. Disqualified students, who are often trying to get back into the legal education system, had a pass rate of just 8.3%. In contrast, special students, who haven’t completed the usual two years of college before starting law school, fared better with a pass rate of 28.6%. These statistics reflect not just numbers, but the real struggles and triumphs of aspiring lawyers navigating their unique paths to success.
