You must get approval from the State Bar FIRST. Submit your CLEP info to the State Bar for pre-approval. Once done, you may apply with us and must include CLEP scores and State Bar approval during the application process.
Definition: A Special Student is an applicant whose pre-law studies do not satisfy the standard two-year college requirement (60+ semester units or Associate/Bachelor's degree). Instead, they meet the educational requirement through passing CLEP examinations.
CLEP Requirements:
- College Composition CLEP exam (passing score: 50 or higher), PLUS
- One of: (a) Two additional CLEP exams (6+ credits each), OR (b) Four additional CLEP exams (3+ units each), OR (c) Three additional CLEP exams (one 6+ units, two 3+ units)
Required Steps for Admission:
- Take CLEP Exams at collegeboard.org
- Send Scores to State Bar (Recipient Code: 7165)
- File "Application for Evaluation of Pre-Legal Education" with State Bar
Note: Since LA Law Institute is unaccredited, ALL students (both Regular and Special) are required to take and pass the First-Year Law Students' Exam (FYLSX) after completing their first year of study.
CLEP Exam Information:
- Administered by The College Board
- Passing score: 50 or higher
- English Composition must NOT be the modular exam
- Eligible subjects: Composition and Literature (Humanities only), Foreign Language, History and Social Science, Science and Mathematics, Business
