Why is F840 on your EIN?
When we first had this idea to start a non-profit organization for education, we were torn between the legal and medical fields. Regardless of the area, we knew that we wanted to support the underserved and help those who could then advocate for others in their communities. Having two step sons that were both on the autism spectrum, we decided that our efforts would go towards educating both the kids and parents who needed support. We found in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Copyright © 2013) that diagnosis was give a code of F84.0. We thought that if we focused on this area, F84.0 would be our name so that parents, family and others would be able to identify our program. However, due to ongoing issues with “the system”, we thought we would be in better position to advocate for other from a legal point of view. To that end, we partnered with medical and legal professionals to craft a legal education organization that could help the underserved in a different form .
Our focus is still on advocating for others and helping others become advocates, we wanted to change our name to represent our new focus. In 2018 we started using the name LA Law Institute and officially changed our name with the State of California and have recently submitted an official name change to the IRS.
